As the entertainment landscape shifts, with audiences becoming increasingly reliant on digital streaming platforms, the cinema industry faces significant challenges worldwide. However, under the leadership of Naveed Cader; Director and Executive Chairman and Thushan Meemanage; Director/ CEO, Scope Cinemas has emerged in Sri Lanka. Together, they are redefining how the cinematic experience is delivered, balancing technological innovation with a deep understanding of consumer behavior, all while steering the company through turbulent times in the entertainment industry.

Naveed Cader – Director and Executive Chairman

The rapid rise of streaming platforms, offering content instantly to consumers at home, has transformed the way people engage with films and entertainment. Yet, Naveed remains confident in the resilience of the cinema industry. “The cinema industry has constantly been reevaluated,” he explains. “Innovation is at its core, from simple projection systems to formats like Dolby Atmos, IMAX, and 3D. This evolution draws people out of their homes, offering something that simply cannot be replicated by streaming services”.

Naveed points to the immersive and social nature of the cinema experience as a key driver that keeps audiences coming back. “Watching a movie in a cineplex is more than just about the film—it’s a social event,” he says. “It’s an opportunity to meet friends, enjoy a meal, and experience something together that you just can’t get at home.” He also emphasizes that certain types of content, particularly major cinematic releases, are specifically designed for the big screen and fall flat when released directly to streaming platforms. “Recent attempts to release big-budget films on digital platforms failed to resonate with audiences. Those films were made for the theater, where the impact is far greater”.

This belief in the value of the theatrical experience is what drives Scope Cinemas to continually innovate and enhance their offerings, ensuring that cinema-goers receive an experience that is superior to what they can get at home.

At the heart of Scope Cinemas’ success is its leadership philosophy, which fosters collaboration, empowerment, and adaptability. Naveed has transitioned the company from a traditional top-down leadership model to one that embraces collective decision-making and creativity. “We’ve moved away from authoritative leadership. Instead, we empower our teams to make decisions collectively,” he explains. “We need to get out of our traditional mindsets and foster creativity at every level—whether it’s improving the customer experience or innovating within the workplace”.

This shift in leadership style is key to navigating the ever-changing cinema industry. “It’s about being proactive and adaptive. We operate in an environment where technology, consumer preferences, and market conditions are constantly changing. To stay ahead, we must bring together the best creative and analytical minds to ensure we are making the best decisions.’’

Naveed’s emphasis on teamwork extends to the company’s management structure, which fosters a balanced approach to decision-making. “There is a hierarchy in management, but we ensure that both artistic and administrative perspectives are considered when making decisions. Whether we’re discussing new ventures or day-to-day operations, the senior management takes an active role in balancing these perspectives to keep the company thriving.”

Thushan Meemanage – Director/ CEO of Scope Cinemas

While Naveed leads Scope Cinemas with a big-picture approach, Thushan grounds the company’s operations in data-driven insights and financial discipline. With an extensive background in financial and strategic management, he has implemented advanced data analytics to drive operational efficiency, optimize performance, and enhance profitability.

“At Scope Cinemas, we prioritize a data-driven approach,” says Thushan. “Our financial data informs key decisions across all departments, from film scheduling and investment evaluations to setting performance targets. By analyzing ticket sales patterns, we employ revenue management techniques, such as dynamic pricing, where ticket prices adjust according to demand, rising during peak times and lowering during off-peak periods. This ensures that we are maximizing revenue without alienating our audience.”

He also applies data insights to improve Scope Cinemas’ ancillary services, such as food and beverage sales. “We use data to identify trends in product demand, ensuring we stock the right items that cater to customer preferences. Low-performing products are replaced with more popular options, which helps us optimize our bar sales and increase profitability.”

Thushan’s financial expertise extends beyond data analysis. He has drawn on his experience managing companies in various industries to introduce innovative financial strategies at Scope Cinemas. “One key lesson I’ve learned is the importance of activity-based management—finding ways to reduce costs without compromising quality,” he explains. “We’ve increased staffing during peak hours, negotiated with suppliers to cut costs, and used technology to automate processes, improving both efficiency and the customer experience.”

His commitment to financial discipline has proven invaluable, particularly during periods of economic and social turmoil, such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the Easter attacks in Sri Lanka. “We’ve learned the importance of maintaining healthy liquidity ratios and closely monitoring cash flows. This has ensured the company’s resilience, allowing us to navigate through challenging times with minimal disruption”.

Thushan has also diversified Scope Cinemas’ revenue streams, extending beyond traditional ticket sales. “We generate revenue through special events, food and beverage offerings, private screenings, and even advertising. This diversification has not only boosted our revenue but also allowed us to create unique experiences for our customers, keeping them engaged and loyal to the brand.”

Naveed and Thushan both recognize the importance of balancing the artistic and commercial aspects of the cinema business. While creativity and innovation are essential to delivering a memorable cinematic experience, commercial realities must also be considered to ensure profitability and sustainability.

“It’s a team effort,” Naveed emphasizes. “Our leadership team actively works to ensure that artistic ideas are tempered by commercial realities. We have weekly and monthly meetings where every team member is encouraged to share their ideas, but ultimately, it’s our responsibility as senior management to strike the right balance.”
Thushan adds, “We must constantly find ways to enhance operational efficiency without compromising on the quality of the experience we deliver. Whether it’s through data analytics or innovative financial strategies, our goal is to keep Scope Cinemas at the forefront of the industry while ensuring long-term growth.”

Looking ahead, both Naveed and Thushan are optimistic about the future of Scope Cinemas and the broader entertainment industry in Sri Lanka. With a focus on innovation, collaboration, and data-driven decision-making, they are confident that the company will continue to thrive, even in the face of increasing competition from streaming services and changing consumer preferences.

Naveed sees tremendous potential for growth, particularly as technology continues to advance. “The cinema experience is constantly evolving. As new formats and technologies emerge, we are committed to being at the forefront of that innovation, ensuring that we continue to offer an experience that draws people out of their homes and into our theaters.’’

Thushan, meanwhile, remains focused on ensuring that the company remains financially robust, even as it expands. “We are constantly exploring new ways to diversify our revenue streams and optimize our operations. By staying ahead of the curve and continuously adapting to market conditions, I believe we can not only survive but thrive in this industry.”

Together, Naveed Cader and Thushan Meemanage are not just leading Scope Cinemas—they are reshaping the future of cinema in Sri Lanka, one innovative idea at a time.
