Initiating his career expedition at an early age, Roshan De Silva faced many obstacles along the way. However, they were all different from the amount of experience and knowledge he gained through each passing day. Currently the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Jabin Consultancy Pvt. Ltd, Roshan admits to having had an incredible journey with the achievement of significant heights within his industry.
Rooting from the city of Jaffna, Roshan eventually set down his roots in Colombo. His value for family is deeply embedded in his heart. Roshan was born into a family of three sisters and two brothers. His father passed on when he was just thirteen. In the year 1997, Roshan got married to a preschool teacher, with whom he has two beautiful children, a daughter and a son. “My family’s future and success were of the utmost importance in my life and many sacrifices were made to stay afloat and focused”.
Roshan had to undertake challenging projects from day one. “The tasks I had received were not easy with the given circumstances in our area of expertise and the lack of support from financial agencies involved. There were many more drawbacks too”, he mentions. “There were many occasions where we required positive support but unfortunately there was no recognition in our industry”.
Jabin Consultancy is branded as a business entity only, given the fact that they create projects solely based on global knowledge and thus further apply it to the local perspective. Designing unique concepts of which many do not have a proper understanding, the company focuses greatly on setting forth projects on the right path. “We do not worry about the cost, we try to create the best and safe concept for the end user. Which is from Kids to adults alike”.
Some of the main Projects which we designed and completed, were Diyatha Uyana for SLLRDC, one of the iconic projects, in 2015. The Colombo Municipal Council (Viharamahadevi) Play Area in 2019, and many more having said that the below mentioned project is closer to my heart since it has created smiles and happiness for the differently Abled, which is the only play area dedicated to them in Sri Lanka. Which was the Kelimadala Children’s park for SLLRDC, the equipment was designed to cater to the Differently abled kids, which is located In Werasganga, Borelesgamuwa,
Furthermore, we completed the four hospitals for the ministry of health Sri Lanka COVID-19 Emergency Response and Health Systems Preparedness Projects, which was Renovation of Mental Health Units at the Divisional Hospitals in Thalangama, Katugasthota, Nawalapitiya and Monaragala, for Kids Mental Rehabilitation, and development.
Such dedication has only ever inspired Roshan to grow and help others to grow and attain knowledge in every aspect despite having access to very few resources. Roshan has never faltered in sharing apprehension. “I like to see others grow to attain the same level of understanding and strength which I have within me, which makes me proud and happy to see the progress and outcome of others”, he says emphatically.
Providing a better insight on Jabin Consultancy, Roshan talks about the company providing turnkey solutions such as mapping, designing, Import and supply, installations as well as service and repair. The solutions are provided for indoor gym equipment, outdoor gym equipment, children’s play areas and water-themed parks. The products we supply “Our products are made specifically for the Asian and European markets, with European design and safety features, with all required safety and conformity certifications, with long-term warranties”, Roshan explains.
Jabin Consultancy (Pvt) Ltd employs a concept called ‘Wellness For All’. “Our services are broad-based from our premium customers to low and middle-income customers by supplying brand new equipment with cost-effective, service life, warranty, competent and timely technical assistance at all levels”, he says. “We do the layout designs and support you in placing the equipment as to the location requirements and minimize errors in procurement decisions prior to ordering”. The company provides installation support online. And staff is trained by overseas supervisors, the official distributors we work with the Playworld, USA, DC Enterprises, India, and supply our own brand Olympia as well.
The company faced a negative impact on their backyard due to the global economic crisis that recently took place with the appearance of the pandemic. As a solution, Jabin Consultancy chose to be a distributor over a direct supplier and partnered with entrepreneurs and businesses, especially their competitors. “We will provide the valuable knowledge we have gained during the past years and support them by designing and supplying world-leading products such as Play Equipment from Playworld, Lewisburg, USA and DC Enterprises, in Mumbai India to support them to get the best products and services” under one umbrella.
One of the most recently completed projects from Jabin Consultancy was the Havelock City Mall Indoor Dry Play Area and Wet Play Area. While the equipment was placed in the year 2020, the pandemic had different plans. The impact on the installation process delayed the completion by two years. “It was completed on 16th September 2022”, he states, “The DoubleTree by Hilton Rajarwarna Resort in Weeravila which was an Outdoor Dry Play Area in two acres of land. Completed on 10th December 2022 as well.
Due to the periodic import restrictions, banking variations and political instability, Roshan believes the market to be constantly distracted. And “we don’t have a proper platform to discuss our grievances and lack of continuity of any system being implemented”, he says. Awaiting the market’s reaction to such circumstances only distracts a company from its ultimate goals and makes it harder for them to regain its motivation and courage to sustain itself in the market. “The recognition to our industry is not properly identified as yet and at least after this article there will be scope for the upcoming young entrepreneurs to be recognized”.
Enlightening us on the philosophies at Jabin Consultancy and Roshan’s characteristics as a leader, he says, “Being a leader is not an easy task having said that I have always believed you have to listen to the market requirements and the positive vibes created by many global prerequisites and adhere to it”. There is no doubt that in order for any company to thrive successfully, it takes the effort of a team to make it happen. And so, Roshan emphasizes the importance of being a team player and supporting his contractors & employees throughout the process of learning. Ensuring they progress smoothly every step of the way, Roshan also assists them in gaining an understanding beyond the scope of services they contribute to the company.
“An entrepreneur cannot be groomed with only a set of present abilities. He should master the professional aspect and acquire good interpersonal skills as well as be a good team leader”, he explains. “You cannot change things overnight, and the young guns out there should think out of the box and have patience over patience to achieve what we have achieved in terms of projects entrusted to our Company and successfully completed”.
Parting with a few words of wisdom, Roshan encourages all young and upcoming entrepreneurs to take risks based on their judgments. “Experience and learn and progress, and give your valuable know-how to others, and brainstorm with like-minded people and progress daily and be accountable for your actions and don’t waste time”.
