Nestled in the heart of Colombo amidst the bustling traffic and chaos of Thummulla Junction lies a quaint English-inspired brick building with a distinct blue door, Blooms and Butterflies (B&B), an enchanting haven for all parents-to-be. But beyond its charming facade lies a tale of inspiration, creativity, and the unwavering bond between a mother-in-law and daughter-in-law, embodied in the journey of Olu Wimalasena and Vinoda Godamunne.

The seeds of B&B were sown in the faraway lands of Scotland, where Olu found herself in the company of an elderly lady whose shop held more than just embroidered baby layettes. It held a timeless lesson – to find passion in life and turn it into a livelihood. Inspired by the proprietor’s sage advice to pursue her passion, Olu embarked on a journey to blend her love for art with her entrepreneurial spirit.

Supported by her husband’s expertise in garment manufacturing and guided by her artistic vision, Olu embarked on a journey to realize her dream: to see her sketches adorn the finest baby bedding. Encouraged by her two sons and supported by her husband’s resources, Olu, once a teacher, and then full-time mum, stepped into the world of entrepreneurship.

The brand logo for B&B was designed by Olu’s eldest son, a mark of her family’s dedication to the success of her dream. In 2013, B&B opened its doors in K-Zone Ja-Ela, marking the first chapter of Olu’s dream. A year later, the flagship store in Borella emerged, a testament to her unwavering dedication and the growing demand for her distinctive creations.

Later that same year, fate intervened in the form of Vinoda, her eldest son’s then-girlfriend. A second-year fashion marketing and management student from a family of publishers, Vinoda was entranced by Olu’s designs where each product carried with it a whimsical tale waiting to be told. Drawing inspiration from Olu’s original tagline, “with a bedtime story to tell,” Vinoda embarked on a mission to weave narratives into the fabric of B&B. Together, they breathed life into characters and motifs, creating a world where imagination knew no bounds.

Olu’s creative process was rooted in her love for nature, drawn from visits to the English countryside. She immersed herself in the serene beauty of nature, where lush meadows and whispering woodlands became her muse. It was amidst these idyllic landscapes that Olu found inspiration for the endearing characters and motifs that adorned B&B’s offerings. From playful woodland creatures to enchanting floral patterns, each design reflected Olu’s keen eye for detail and her unwavering commitment to infusing every aspect of B&B with magic and wonder.

Meanwhile, Vinoda’s vision extended beyond product design; she sought to infuse the brand with a sense of literary charm, weaving narratives into every aspect of its identity. From product descriptions to marketing campaigns, she created compelling stories to complement Olu’s products, infusing them with a sense of charm and whimsy that resonated with customers. Through her strategic vision and creative storytelling, Vinoda hopes to create a strong brand presence that would bleed into every aspect of the business, fostering its growth into a beloved global brand for parents-to-be.

From the interiors of the retail stores to the layout of the website and promotional photography, Olu and Vinoda ensured that every touchpoint reflected the essence of B&B – a place where magic and storytelling converge. Under their guidance, B&B transformed into more than just a store; it became an experience, a sanctuary for parents-to-be embarking on the nesting period.

The nesting period, a crucial time for mothers-to-be, is a time of preparation and anticipation, as they create a magical space for their little ones. Recognizing the importance of this period, Olu curates a collection of products and services aimed at making this journey as enchanting as possible.

Offering a wide array of products ranging from baby bedding, furniture, the hospital list, newborn clothing, baby essentials, and wall accessories, to maternity nightwear, B&B caters to every need of the modern parent. Olu’s unique touch extended beyond mere retail; she provided interior solutions for baby rooms, drawing inspiration from her visits to the English countryside where she encountered countless woodland creatures. Her belief in creating a space for babies from birth to foster independence resonates in every corner of B&B.

But beyond business success lies a deeper legacy – one of empowerment and community. Through safe work environments and a commitment to female empowerment, Olu and Vinoda are not just building a brand; they’re shaping a future where dreams know no bounds.

By manufacturing locally, Olu not only ensures the highest standards of craftsmanship but also creates employment opportunities within the country. In light of the economic crisis and subsequent import bans, Olu’s decision to manufacture locally has proven to be a sound business strategy.

By reducing reliance on imports and supporting domestic industries, B&B has navigated through challenging times with resilience, ensuring the continuity of its operations and maintaining its commitment to quality and integrity.

With four physical stores based in Colombo 05, Colombo 08, Dehiwala, and Negombo, B&B has become synonymous with quality, craftsmanship, and heartfelt storytelling.

Looking towards the future, Olu envisions B&B as a globally recognized baby lifestyle brand, a symbol of her unwavering determination and the bond she shares with Vinoda. Together, they defy stereotypes, proving that the relationship between a mother-in-law and a daughter-in-law can transcend tradition.

In the heart of B&B lies a story – a story of artistry, family, and resilience. As Olu and Vinoda continue to craft their dreams, they invite the world to join them on a journey where every stitch tells a tale of love, imagination, and the beauty of possibility. Through their collaborative efforts, they have not only created a successful business but also a legacy of creativity and empowerment that will endure for generations to come.
