Starting from the absolute ground level to positioning himself where he is today as a CEO, the qualities of perseverance, effort, consistency, and courage to face challenges faced by him have eminently supported his career as well as simultaneously uplifted the companies he has been a part of throughout his career.
With an educational background in the field of commerce and an initial background in finance, the decision to move on to a career path in insurance came as an internal transfer where he was exposed to underwriting, claims and reinsurance. As a natural professional at handling those areas, Sithumina went on to further his exposure to insurance through expanding his professional qualifications. Parallelly developing both his career as well as his professional education Sithumina remained consistent and loyal to the career path he chose to further himself in.
This quality of consistency earned him exposure to many opportunities in different organizations, where he was exposed to a diversified and all-around professional career. Having worked in leading organizations like Eagle Insurance, Janashakthi, Aviva NDB, MBSL and Asian Alliance, his journey stands as an accumulated treasure of priceless experience and exposure that is highly valued by industry professionals. His key experiences of handling all the RI recovery cases from the natural disaster of tsunami in 2004 when he worked in Janashakthi and his experience of managing many areas at MBSL during the 2008 economic crisis, molded him to handle a number of various challenges with courage and tenacity whilst also dedicating himself to furthering his specialized higher studies that resulted in positioning himself as the Most Outstanding Sri Lankan Candidate at the Chartered Insurance Institute, UK, in 2012, which earned him prominent recognition in the field of insurance.
Sithumina is the 19th President of the Sri Lanka Insurance Institute (SLII). SLII is an esteemed institute affiliated to the Chartered Insurance Institute of London and the Insurance Institute of India and offers a number of educational and training programs on insurance. He is also a founding Council Member of the Association of Chartered Insurance Professionals (ACIP) in Sri Lanka and holds a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from the Cardiff Metropolitan University, UK, an Advanced Diploma in Insurance (ACII – UK) and holds the status of a Chartered Insurer and the Senior Associateship of the Australian and New Zealand Institute of Insurance and Finance.
Along with the qualifications and experience to support his true and valuable efforts, his 24 years of dedication to the filed of insurance made him the youngest CEO of HNB General Insurance as he assumed office in 2022. Under his leadership and guidance, the Company is set to redefine all its systems and processes, to become a leader in the general insurance marketing and thereby delivering greater value to all its customers and other stakeholders.
With the appointment of Sithumina, HNB General Insurance is keener than ever to serve the best and be the best in the industry. With strategies to power through the hard times the pandemic has resulted in, the company is on a path of reinvention with the hope of placing themselves on the top tier by 2025.
