CIMA C-Suite Alumni Series: In Conversation with Aroshi Nanayakkara

With over 20 years of experience in Multinationals and some of Sri Lanka’s prominent blue chip companies, Aroshi Nanayakkara, the Chief Executive Officer of Global Consulting Company is an expert in the fields of Strategic Planning, Human Resources and Risk Management.

Aroshi began her career as a Corporate Banker, initially at ABN AMRO Bank NV and later at Deutsche Bank AG Sri Lanka. Later, she moved from Banking into HR and joined Eagle Insurance, which was then a subsidiary of the Ceylon Tobacco Company, handling HR Development and Strategic Planning for the company. She quickly rose up the corporate ladder to join the Delmege Group as Group Director Human Resource Development while also serving as a Board Director of its subsidiary, Delmege Interior Decor (Pvt) Ltd.

Yet again, Aroshi shifted fields to join Sri Lanka’s largest apparel firm, Brandix Lanka Ltd, as Chief Risk Officer handling audit and compliance. Her final role at Brandix was an operational one, as CEO of Brandix Hangers (Pvt) Ltd.  She left Brandix to start her journey as an entrepreneur and to set up her own consulting firm specialising in Strategy, HR and risk management.

How has your experience been with the CIMA C-Suite Business and Finance programme?

My experience with the CIMA C-Suite Business and Finance programme was extremely satisfactory.  The small group classes were ideally suited to delivering learning at a C-suite level. In addition, the course material and the facilitators were technically sound and competent in their area of specialization.  Given that the other participants too were at C-suite level, there was much cross-learning that took place as well.

Why would you recommend the CIMA C-Suite Business and Finance programme?

This programme is ideally suited to C-suite learning.  The small class size, the content being delivered in an e-form where one can complete the assignments at one’s own convenience and timing, the knowledgeable resource personnel and the concise lectures make it a highly viable option for C-suite executives.  The premise of the entire programme is based on the fact that participants too are coming in with extensive knowledge in their own fields.

Explain your experience being an Associate member of CIMA.

My personal experience of being a CIMA Associate member has been very good with CIMA being in constant touch with me, inviting me to member events, facilitating networking with others etc.

What’s the most challenging task as a senior leader of a leading bank in Sri Lanka?

The year 2020 was thrown into chaos by the global pandemic. In this background, the most challenging task as a senior leader of a bank has been the speed at which we had to adapt to the new way of being.  The entire working pattern, processes and even some business lines had to be re-thought and reworked to make sense.

As a Director of Sampath Bank, what opportunities do you perceive for the organisation?

There is enormous potential for the banking industry in Sri Lanka to upskill and upgrade in terms of its people and technology, to be one of best players regionally as well as globally. MNCs in Sri Lanka will vouch for the fact that our people have tremendous capacity.  Many Sri Lankan banks have also embraced technology to reach their fullest capacity.  Along with people and technology, we also need to aspire to and envision being the global best.  This responsibility lies with the Board of Directors and the strength of its management.
